Pathanamthitta is a combination of two words Pathanam and Thitta which mean an array of houses on the river side.

This district was formed on Ist November 1982 in the interest of the hastening process of development. It is presumed that the regions presently under the district were formerly under the Pandalam reign which had connections with the Pandya Kingdom. Pathanamthitta now includes portions of the erstwhile Kollam Alappuzha and Idukki districts. Pathanamthitta, Adoor, Ranni, Konni and Kozhencherry are some of the important places taken from Kollam district, whereas Thiruvalla and Mallappally are the major places taken from Alappuzha district


Aranmula is a little temple town in Pathanamthitta District, surrounded by undulating green hillocks and girdled by the holy river Pampa. The temple here is dedicated to Lord Krishna.Aranmula is also famous for its metal mirrors made of bell meta which is known as 'Aranmula Kannadi'.This is a unique art which is not found any where else in the world . It is believed that a divine visitation inspired a window of this village to discover a mysterious blend of bronze which could be waxed bright in to crystal clear mirror. This town is also famous for the Aranmula Vallamkali (Boat Race), which is held on the annual commemoration of the week long Onam festival. The exciting event begins in the afternoon, each snake boat is thirty feet long containing four helmsman, hundred rowers and twenty five singers.


A forested village situated on the banks of the mighty Achankovil River in Pathanamthitta District, Konni has a long and rich history of man-forest interface. Crisscrossed by numerous streams and rivulets, and the vast expanse of the Western Ghats, Konni is renowned for its Elephant Training Centre - the oldest of its kind in India. One of the first Reserve Forests in the State, the forests in and around Konni were once inhabited by aboriginals. A repository of rich biodiversity, this unique land was constituted into Konni and Achankovil Reserve Forests way back in 1897 and 1901 respectively. The forested tract in this geographical location provides the right climate and environment for the development and sustenance of diverse flora including a variety of medicinal herbs.


Perunthenaruvi Waterfalls are waterfalls 15 km from Pathanamthitta in Pathanamthitta District, Central Travancore region, Kerala State, India. It is a popular tourist destination. The name "Perunthenaruvi" means "The Great Honey Stream". Located on the Western Ghats of the Sahyadri Range, Perunthenaruvi is famous for the waterfalls there. The waterfalls are known for their wide area, rather than their height. The stream later unites with the Pamba River.


Aranmula Vallamkali (Boat race) is a famous water fiesta is held during Onam (August - September). The snake boats assemble near the Sri Parthasarathy Temple before the grand procession. Each boat is 100 ft. long and accommodates 4 helmsmen, 100 oarsmen and 25 singers. The snake boats move in pairs to the rhythm of full throated singing and shouting, watched by an excited crowd. The commencement of the event is marked by a snake-boat race in the afternoon. Early morning, the Snake Boats assemble near the temple, and take off in pairs. Snake-Boats in action, with incessant full-throated singing and vociferous shouting by the crowds in an exciting event.
